Meet a Mom: Ellen Eppie | Union County Moms

How many children do you have and what are their age(s)?
I have two beautiful daughters, ages 28 and 31.

How long have you lived in (your town)? What made you decide to live here?
I currently have a boutique in Chatham, NJ. I am celebrating my second year here at the end of October, 2019.
Chatham is a very family oriented community. It is a pleasure to be a member of the business community. I believe in supporting my community. I host many events at Scooch A Mi Boutique where like-minded women entrepreneurs share their talents, gifts and knowledge with the local community. There is so much information that needs to be shared so people can know what is out there for them when they need help with something.

What’s your favorite family activity Chatham, Madison or Summit?
Eating and shopping! There are so many great restaurants and each has its unique appeal.
I love shopping local and appreciate all that small businesses do for their community.

Where’s your favorite place to eat and/or shop Chatham, Madison or Summit?
For a nice meal I like D’Oro and Gregorio’s in Chatham.
Chianti in Chatham is a great spot for lunch or a casual dinner.
You can bring a nice bottle of wine to all the above restaurants.
Sorriso is a new breakfast and lunch place where the owners and food are delightful.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I began my journey as an entrepreneur at the age of 59! You are never too old! Don’t underestimate what you can accomplish.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?
Definitely my other mom friends that I had around me. Back in the day, family members lived close to each other. Nowadays, families are spread out leaving young moms all on their own. “It takes a village.” is so true. You need support as a mom. It is not a sign of weakness or ineptness. All of us get tired, sick, sad, overwhelmed. It’s so important to have women you can share this with and call upon to help you. Who knows? The next week someone else will need support. I tell young moms to find their tribe. Don’t isolate yourself. And remember to be open to others who may need you.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!
Scooch A Mi Boutique, Chatham, NJ where spreading Mindful Kindness is my mission. I feature handmade jewelry, accessories and gifts by designers and artisans who Give Back to a community, cause and recycle to be kind to the earth.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
The Chatham Community has embraced my mission. When someone shops at Scooch A Mi they leave with a Purchase with a Purpose. Every item has a story and I love to share it!

What’s your favorite form of self care?
I’ve been learning meditation and practicing gratitude. There are two women who host workshops at Scooch A Mi on these subjects. Miriam Belov, RMT, MAT and Dr. Peggy Delong, the Gratitude Psychologist. Miriam teaches women to take time for themselves and be present exactly where they are. You don’t need hours to do this….only moments. It makes such a huge difference in your life. The better you take time for your the better you have to give others. Peggy taught me the amazing mindset change practicing gratitude brings. You could be having the worst day, but look up. Is the sky a beautiful blue? Can you spare a moment to bask in its glory and be thankful that it is such a great day? You might be running around doing all kinds of errands and making yourself crazy. Be grateful that you can run around and that you have a vehicle to make this all so much easier. Acknowledging the things we take for granted and the little things in life can really give your day a lift.
